REMEMBERING
Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, kept a piece of her husband’s heart for 30 years. She was bereft at the death of her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. When he died from drowning at the age of 29, he was cremated on a beach, and a calcified piece of his heart remained among the ashes (at least she thought it was a piece of his heart). She kept it for the rest of her life. There might be better ways of remembering. When we take the Lord’s Supper, we take symbolic representation of the body and blood of Jesus. But what also happens is that our remembering means that Jesus resides in our hearts.
