Reconciliation

The Ron Chernow biography of Grant has caused a reappraisal of a man whose presidency has been unappreciated. While some of Ulysses S. Grant’s staff were corrupt, he was not and remained popular with the American people. While Grant was a tough general, his campaign motto was, “Let us have peace.” He worked hard to reconcile North and South after the Civil War. He also stood up for persecuted African Americans during Reconstruction. The American people admired his courage during his ultimately losing battle with cancer. Grant’s procession to his grave in New York was attended by 1.5 million people.

As part of his desire to promote reconciliation, Grant chose as pallbearers General Sherman, General Sheridan, and Admiral Porter. That is not surprising since they were comrades in arms. Also serving were General Johnson and General Buckner, generals from the defeated Confederate Army. Even in death, President Grant wanted to promote forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace.
