In Nepal, there are two communities that joined together for an annual ten-day festival. Many communities have festivals that commemorate things like peanuts, wool, sauerkraut, navy beans, along with festivals that commemorate historical events and persons. What is this festival about? It is a “cursing festival.” By that, I don’t mean swearing or profanity. It involves calling down curses on people, insulting them, and wishing bad things to happen to them. It is a festival for children that has been going on longer than the villagers can remember. Residents claim it is not so bad, that people get it out of their system and are friendlier after that. I hope that is so, but doesn’t it seem that social media has become a non-stop cursing festival? People write things on social media that they would never say to a person to their face. We should be quite careful how we speak of others because our words have power for good or evil.
