Evangelism

Hacksaw Ridge is a difficult movie to watch due to its violent combat scenes, but it tells the story of an extraordinary man named Desmond Doss. Doss was a devout Seventh-Day Adventist and pacifist.

When World War II broke out, he wanted to do his part but did not want to carry a gun. He volunteered to be a combat medic and was eventually given permission to do so. He served in the Pacific theater and at the Battle of Hacksaw Ridge.

Doss watched as his comrades charged over and over again toward the enemy. When they pulled back to make another attempt, Doss was left with the wounded men. He devised a rope system and lowered many men over the ridge to be cared for by medical doctors. When the dust settled, it was determined that Doss saved 75 wounded men.

It was not without cost. He was wounded four times, had 17 pieces of shrapnel in his body, and broke several ribs. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor.

In an interview later in life, he said that he surveyed the wounded men on the battlefield and asked God for wisdom as to how to save them. After he saved one, he would pray, “Please Lord, let me get one more.” What if we who serve Christ were to make that our prayer—that the Lord would help us save just one more?
