When John Maxwell was starting out as a pastor he contacted the pastors of the ten largest churches in America and offered them $100 each for a half hour interview. The inspiration gained from these conversations gave birth to a vision for ministry that has served him well for decades (141). Now, for the price of $16.99, pastors can get the same kind of insight through reading Preaching with Power.

Anyone who reads Preaching magazine, knows that the interviews are one of the best parts of the magazine. Now, Michael Duduit, the editor of Preaching, brings us twenty of the best of these interviews under one cover. These conversations, arranged thematically ( “Preaching and the City”; “Preaching to Engage Culture”; “Preaching through Pain”...), bring the best thinking of people like Rick Warren, Haddon Robinson, Dan Kimball, and Jerry Falwell together for the preacher’s consideration and encouragement.

The selection of contributors says something about the state of evangelical preaching. All twenty are men. Nineteen of them are white. Most are from the south. Almost half are Southern Baptists. All are currently (or were recently) pastoring megachurches. Of course, we wouldn’t be much interested in hearing from unsuccessful preachers, nevertheless, there is a definite slant to the presentations.

Not that all agree. It is interesting to note the strong traditional bent toward classic capital-E Expository preaching championed by most contributors, over and against the less structured, more narrative approaches of some others. There are one or two “seeker-church” pastors and one or two from the “emerging church.”

The line of questioning is somewhat standard, which is a strength of the book. It is helpful to compare responses to questions like, “How do you structure your preparation time?”, and “What do you take with you into the pulpit?”

Overall, reading this book will encourage the preacher, that great preaching is still possible and that great preaching still helps people grow in Christ. For that reason alone it is a worthy read.
