Three Points and a Poem
Posted by Jason Johnson on July 23, 2008 10:16
I’m a preacher. I love preaching. I enjoy conversations about preaching. I appreciate hearing a good sermon, well delivered. My typical approach to preaching is, in my estimation, quite "classical." I take a text. Pray about it. Study it. Pull out the appropriate points. Then I put these points together in a logical sequence. I flesh out the three points with stories, humour, passion and persuasion. I usually have to have a full manuscript (even though 10 years ago Dr. Anderson tried to persuade me to get away from it!) Fortunately people enjoy my preaching and I enjoy my typical approach. But as I’m now in a new position as Lead Pastor I’m wondering: is this the only way? Is there a more modern way of preaching? Should I change my approach? Can I learn some new preaching practices that cover everything from research to devleopment to delivery? If anyone has any advice for this preacher I’d love to hear it.
